How Do We Pray Without Ceasing At Work?

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself this? I know I have. At times, it seems like a logistical nightmare. You don’t want people to think you’re sleeping on the job when you close your eyes in prayer! So what are we supposed to do? Get on our knees? Hide in the bathroom while we pray? Lock ourselves in a conference room alone?

Well, after years of praying on the job, I actually don’t think it needs to look like any of those things. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says this: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

This is impossible if we define prayers as an activity that must be done on our knees, or with our eyes closed. God is not calling us to do something impossible. I once heard prayer defined as simply connection with God. I thought that was beautiful and so true – at its core, that’s what prayer is.

The truth is, we are in constant communion with God (whether we are aware of Him throughout each moment of our day, or not).  We get to strap on the breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6) and go to work. We can all really work on growing our awareness of how we are in constant communion with the Lord. When we embrace a heart posture of continuous prayer and communion with God, it completely changes our experience of work! We don’t need to stop in our day and ask Him to show up – He is already right there with us.

If something comes up that is a really big challenge, when we are already in this attitude of awareness of Him, we can look to Him for what we are going to do and how we are going to handle a situation. We don’t necessarily need to stop and get in our prayer closet. Sometimes, it is necessary to stop and pray, or even to call a friend or mentor to ask them to cover us in prayer, but that should not be our primary goal when we are being paid to work for someone.

One thing that really helps me is how I start my day each day. On the way to work, I listen to worship music – starting my day in intentional worship really centers me and gives me the ability to find him throughout the rest of my day. Some start with quiet time or Bible time and that carries that awareness with them through the day.

I encourage you to be intentional to recognize that you are in constant communion with God. As you pursue this posture of continual prayer and communion with Him, I think you will find more freedom and more of the heart and will of God than you have ever experienced before!

  1. Bob,
Thank you for this reminder. I am relatively new to being a business owner and have been so blessed by your book, “The Business of Honor”. One of the most important things that I am learning is that it’s really God’s business of which I am the Steward. Staying in continuous contact with Him helps me to remember that.
